Hunter Labrada's 2022 Mr. Olympia Prep: "I Drink 4 Shakes A Day" Out Of 6 Meals

Men’s Open bodybuilder and Mr. Olympia contender Hunter Labrada recently shared his off-season diet – revealing that he drinks 4 out of his six daily meals. Many in the bodybuilding world know that Men’s Open competitors need to eat A LOT of food during the off-season bulking prep phase. Unsurprisingly, it’s not easy to cram that much food into the human body on a daily basis. This appears to be especially true for Labrada, which is why he liquifies more than half of his meals.

Hunter Labrada released a video on his YouTube channel on May 18th, 2022 called “A Full Day Of Eating.” At the top of the video, he quickly corrects the title – calling it a full day of drinking. Why? Because he makes sure that four of his meals for the day are in liquid form.

Doing a meal replacement with a blended or shake for a liquid meal can boost athletic performance – but Hunter Labrada replacing four full meals daily is not something you usually see from the pros. That’s why he goes into detail during his video as to why he developed this system. You can watch the full video below:

As we mentioned at the start of this article, eating mass amounts of food to bulk appropriately in Men’s Open is not easy. In fact, even 4x Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler called bulking in bodybuilding “force feeding.” For Hunter Labrada, this is especially hard. He explains in his video that he often struggles with his appetite but understands that he needs to push more calories in for the off season in order to grow.

This is the main reason why he uses shakes for majority of his meals . Instead of trying to force feed protein down his throat – he has an easier time digesting via a shake. Hunter Labrada explains:

“Yes, I do drink four shakes a day… why four shakes a day. Honestly, the reason that I started out is my appetite is absolutely terrible. Eating seven, eight ounces of meat per meal plus the amount of carbs we are pushing during the off season. You know, A: I was throwing up… three to four times a week.

I do handle animal protein well, I just don’t think I can handle animal protein well, doing six meals a day of it. It has been a godsend for my digestion…that and I literally have the appetite of a four-year-old.”

Now that we have the why out of the way, we can do a quick overview of what his six meal daily plan looks like. The first three meals that Hunter Labrada “eats” are all blended shakes. This is followed by two solid meals and capped off with one more shake to end his night.

For his morning breakfast, Hunter Labrada blends two Bobo’s Oat Bars with two scoops of hydrolyzed isolate whey protein . His morning meal typically starts around 7 am. Labrada then jumps back into bed for a few more hours of rest after completing his first meal.

Meal two of the day is not too different from meal one. Hunter Labrada blends together vaporized Rice Krispie Treats cereal with a quality whey protein powder for another meal replacement shake.

For the third liquid meal of the day, Labrada combines 130 grams fo Rice Krispies and 66 grams of whey protein into another shake. Labrada even jokes that this third meal is “really exciting” admitting that it is essentially the exact same thing as meal two… and not too far different from meal one.

You’re probably noticing that this is definitely a lot of Rice Krispies. You wouldn’t be wrong. Hunter Labrada reveals that he can eat an entire family box of Rice Krispie cereal every two days.

Meal four starts to really get interesting. That’s because it is his first non-blended meal of the day. While he does not detail the exact meal – it seems to be somewhat fluid so long as he hits his proper macros .

Labrada makes sure to eat 100 grams of carbs and 50 grams of protein for this meal specifically.

Meal five also sticks with the solid track – and usually includes 300 grams of rice and 200 grams of chicken. While this meal is considered a solid by Labrada, he does still throw the chicken into a blender. Strongman fans may recall that this is similar to Blaine Sumner’s epic chicken shakes as seen in Strength Wars: The Movie .

Interestingly enough, Labrada even breaks down his rice into specifically planned bites. He ensures that he can eat the rice into eight individual bites so that it doesn’t take too long to consume.

The final meal of the day goes back to full-on liquid. In fact, he brings the entire day into full circle by once again blending two Bobo’s Oat Bars with two scoops of hydrolyzed isolate. It creates a perfect circle to cap off his day – and then the entire thing starts over again in the morning.

Many reading this article and perhaps watching this video might find this entire meal plan extremely unappealing. It’s clear that Hunter Labrada is taking the fun out eating and simply making the food as easy to digest as possible. While not typical for most competitors – Labrada does note that his friend and fellow competitor Brett Wilkins also eats a similar liquid-first diet.

Jay Cutler once famously said, “I don’t eat for taste, I eat for function.” That seems to be on full display here in Hunter Labrada’s diet. We’ll see if the plan helps him. build enough muscle – and bring in enough conditioning – to be a true threat on the 2022 Mr. Olympia stage .
