DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a tube pan. In a large bowl, cream sugar with butter and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one. In a separate bowl, mix together cake flour, cocoa, salt and baking powder. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternating with milk. Add vanilla and blend well. Pour or spoon batter evenly into tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 1 hour. Test with a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake for doneness. Serves 16 to 20.

DIRECTIONS: Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan, or two 9x5 inch loaf pans. Measure sugar and butter into a large bowl. With an electric mixer on high speed, beat until light and fluffy. Add cake flour, milk, egg yolks, baking powder, vanilla and salt. Beat on low speed until well mixed. Increase mixer speed to high and beat an additional 4 minutes. Pour batter into pan. For tube pan, bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. For loaf pans bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center will come out clean when cake is done. Remove from pans and cool.

DIRECTIONS: Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cloves into a bowl. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed. Beat until light. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy. On low speed, beat in one-fourth of the flour mixture with one-third of the butter milk. Repeat, ending with the flour mixture. Beat only until combined. Stir in walnuts by hand. Turn batter out into the tube pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 to 65 minutes, until a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a rack for 15 minutes before removing.
